Before you source, lock down four numbers: brightness (≥5,500 nits for direct sun), ingress protection (IP65 minimum, IP66/IP68 for harsher sites), impact resistance (IK10 vandal glass for transit), and ambient-light auto-dimming. Then verify EU/US compliance (CE, UL/cUL, FCC) and a multi-year supply & support commitment. Brightness: the single most common miss
Indoor-rated screens top out around 400–700 nits and are effectively invisible outdoors. Most reputable outdoor units start at 2,500 nits, with premium direct-sun units at 4,000–5,500 nits. If your site faces the sun or is a roadside/transit deployment, plan for the top of that range — and require an ambient-light sensor so the panel dims at night rather than running at full brightness 24/7 (which both wastes power and violates many municipalities' nighttime glare rules).
IP rating: weatherproofing is the real TCO driver
IP65 is the practical floor for any outdoor LED display. For coastal, high-humidity, or dust-heavy locations, insist on IP66/IP68. A cheaper IP65 cabinet installed in a salty coastal environment is a corrosion-and-repair liability that erases the upfront saving within 18–24 months.
Pixel pitch: match it to viewing distance
Pixel pitch should be chosen from how far the audience actually views the screen, not from what's on sale. Larger pitch = cheaper but coarser; smaller pitch = sharper but pricier. For transit platforms, wayfinding and pedestrian-scale content, a tighter pitch is usually worth the premium because content is read close-up.
EU/US compliance: the non-negotiable layer
For buyers in the EU and US, compliance is not a checkbox — it's a gate that blocks installation and ad-sales. Before signing, ask for and verify:
- EU: CE marking, RoHS and (where applicable) EMC/RED compliance for the electronics and controller.
- US: UL/cUL listing and FCC Part 15 compliance.
- Local: any municipality-specific nighttime brightness limits and signage permits.
A supplier who can't produce documentation for these on demand is a red flag no discount justifies.
Risk & de-risk: the questions that separate a partner from a parts-peddler
- Who owns the controller/player stack, and is it locked? A locked controller means you re-buy hardware when the platform dies. Prefer open CMS/API options so ad platforms and wayfinding apps can integrate.
- What is the stated MTBF / rated hours? Reputable outdoor LED panels target ~100,000+ operating hours. Ask for the figure in writing.
- What is the spare-parts and support commitment? For a 5–10 year deployment, ask whether replacement modules, controllers and firmware support are contractually committed for the expected lifetime.
- Who handles service, and at what SLA? A transit screen down in rush hour costs real money and reputation. Get the response-time commitment in the contract.
- Is the cabinet front-serviced or rear-serviced? On wall- or pole-mounted sites rear access may be impossible; front-service panels avoid a full teardown for a single module swap.
How to move from spec to a defensible shortlist
Send every shortlisted supplier the same four numbers — brightness, IP rating, IK rating, operating temperature range — plus your compliance list and your expected deployment lifetime. Anyone who hesitates or "checks back" on these is not ready for an infrastructure buy. Then shortlist on two things only: documented compliance and a committed multi-year service/parts agreement.
