Decision-progression: match the spec to your site
Don't buy one "outdoor kiosk" for every location. Your site conditions change the spec:
- Direct sun, south-facing facade → 2500–4000 nits, and confirm the automatic brightness sensor actually works (dim at night saves power and panel life).
- Coastal / high-humidity or salt air → IP66+, stainless or treated exterior, corrosion-resistant fasteners. The worst kiosk failures we see are in sea-air environments where the spec didn't ask.

Four costliest mistakes to de-risk at RFQ stage
- Buying "brightness" without asking about sustained performance. Peak nits ≠ sustained nits. Ask for the brightness curve over 24/7 operation and the backlight MTBF (target ≥50,000 hours).
- Treating IP65 as one number. A rating tested at the factory bench is not the same as real-world performance. Ask for the test standard (IEC 60529) and how the touch/ports survive after the door is cycled 100,000 times.
- Skipping the thermal simulation. A kiosk that passes spec at 25°C ambient can throttle to a slideshow at 45°C. Ask for the derating curve — cost this before you buy, not after.
- Ignoring certification until the last minute. EU/US buyers need CE (and ideally the EMC + low-voltage directives), FCC/UL for the US, RoHS for materials. Lock the certification list into the contract or you risk customs and site-audit delays.
Certification & compliance checklist (EU/US buyers — read this first)
- EU: CE marking (EMC 2014/30/EU + LVD 2014/35/EU), RoHS. Add EN standards relevant to your market (e.g. EN 60950-1 / EN 62368-1 for the power chain).
- US: FCC Part 15, UL/cUL listing for the enclosure and power supply, and any state-level touchscreen/safety requirements.
- Payment: PCI-PTS for the card reader, and confirm the payment terminal is approved for the acquirer you plan to use in that market.
- Ask the factory for copies of the test reports, not just the logos — verifiable certificates are your insurance against customs and audit surprises.
