To make an outdoor screen readable in direct sunlight you need a panel with enough peak brightness — typically 1,000–3,000 nits depending on placement — combined with optical bonding, an anti-glare (AR) coating, and an IP-rated enclosure. Why "nits" decides the whole sourcing decision
Brightness is measured in nits (cd/m², candela per square metre — see the standard unit definition). An indoor monitor is typically 300–500 nits. Direct summer sunlight on a glass surface is roughly 10,000 nits of ambient light — so a 500-nit panel is effectively unreadable outside. The brightness you need scales with how much sun the screen actually faces:
- Shaded / under canopy: 1,000–1,500 nits
- Partial direct sun: 1,500–2,000 nits
- Fully exposed south-facing: 2,000–3,000 nits
For EU and US buyers, outdoor signage that cannot be read in daylight is a compliance-and-customer-experience problem at the same time: accessibility rules and display legibility increasingly factor into municipal and retail requirements, and a washed-out screen is a sunk installation cost. Brightness is not a marketing number — it is the first pass/fail in your spec.
Sunlight readability is more than brightness
A high-nits number alone does not guarantee legibility. Three co-factors decide whether the panel is truly readable, and each is a common place for low-cost sourcing to quietly cut corners:
- Optical bonding: gluing the cover glass to the LCD removes the internal air gap that scatters light, cutting reflection and boosting effective contrast outdoors. Bonded panels read measurably better in sun at the same nits.
- Anti-glare / AR coating: a matte or anti-reflective layer reduces specular reflection from the sun and nearby windows. Specify the coating explicitly; do not assume it is included.
- Contrast ratio: a high-nits panel with weak contrast still washes out. Require a contrast spec and, critically, real photos taken outdoors in sunlight — not marketing stills shot in a studio.
IP rating: the weather survival spec
IP ratings (e.g. IP65, IP67, IP69K) define protection against dust and water — the difference between a screen that survives a beachfront summer and one that dies within a year. The two-digit scheme is defined by the international IP code standard (IEC 60529). For outdoor deployment look for at least IP65: 6 = fully dust-tight, 5 = protected against low-pressure water jets. Go to IP67 for transient immersion and IP69K for high-pressure washdown environments like food service. Pair the rating with an operating temperature range that covers your local climate extremes, including night-time cold, and confirm the gasket quality — that is where budget enclosures most often fail in year two.

Market-tier notes: EU/US vs SEA vs MENA
EU and US buyers should lead with compliance and legibility — accessibility, electrical safety marking, and display readability in municipal and retail specifications. SEA buyers weigh cost, MOQ and lead time most heavily, and should stress-test thermal performance for high-heat, high-humidity climates. MENA buyers should push on certification and enclosure sealing against dust, heat and sudden sandstorm exposure. The right spec is different for each region, so state your site rather than asking for a generic quote.

Outdoor displays fail most often from heat, moisture ingress, and power instability — not from the panel itself. Before you commit to a source, ask for evidence:
- Ask for real outdoor photos and thermal test data, not datasheets. A 2,000-nit panel that thermally throttles after an hour is useless.
- Verify the enclosure and gasket quality — this is where low-cost sourcing usually cuts corners.
- Confirm the operating temperature range covers your local climate extremes, including night-time cold.
- Check warranty and spare-parts policy for a 3–5 year deployment lifecycle.
